Occasionally, I will review products other than subscription boxes. Today I will be discussing why single-use straws are bad for our environment and I will be reviewing the J.CARP Reusable Drinking Straw Kit. This review was sponsored by the amazon seller J.Carp. I was very excited to work with J.Carp in order to bring a bit of environmental awareness to my readers while reviewing these amazing sustainable reusable stainless steel metal straws that come with silicone mouth-pieces!
Why reusable straws?
Every year billions of plastic straws are used and discarded, never to see the recycling process. Most plastics such as straws are NOT biodegradable and cannot be broken down naturally. Single-use plastics wind up in our landfills, dumps, discarded in the streets or buried in our soil, and sometimes make their way into our oceans, hurting and in worse cases killing marine wildlife. It’s estimated that 100,000 marine animals die from plastic ingestion or by plastic bag entanglement. One time use non-biodegradable plastics was mankind’s worst invention! Currently, many are doing their part to eliminate non-biodegradable plastic waste such as straws. Many switching to 100% biodegradable plastics that are made with hemp fibers or just doing away with single-use plastics entirely. Canada and China plan to ban single-use plastics, McDonald’s recently announced that it will ban straws at it’s U.K. and Ireland restaurants, the food service company Bon Appétit with 1,000 U.S. locations, will phase out plastic straws and stirrers, Starbucks will globally eliminate the use of single-use straws by the end of 2020. Along with these companies, American Airlines, and Marriot Hotels, all announced similar changes against single-use plastics. Most plastic straws are too small and lightweight to be captured in modern recycling equipment and don’t always make it through the machines, they wind up in the trash and back in our landfills.
Why these metal straws?
Unbeknownst to many consumers, plastic straws are not only horrible for the environment, but they are toxic to you! Plastic straws are made with BPA, a chemical that is known to cause cancer! That’s why I switched to food-grade metal straws. I have had these reusable straws for almost a week now, and I have used them for every drink I have consumed since they arrived(of coarse cleaning them before first use). I don’t think I could ever consider going back to using plastic straws knowing I’d be contributing to more plastic waste, besides, you never know if other chemicals or bacteria could have been introduced to your plastic straws when you’re in a public restaurant. Yuck!
The kit comes with 16 food-grade stainless steel, 4 cleaning brushes and 24 soft silicone tips to use on the metal tips. The metal straws are made of top food-grade 18/8 304 stainless steel. FDA approved and BPA free, none toxic. They come in 4 sizes and 4 straw for each size, great for huge insulated mugs and cups like Yeti, or smaller cups like ceramic mugs. I’ve been using the small curved straw in my 8oz tumbler, it fits right through the lid’s mouthpiece and is convenient to use when I am writing reviews like this, I can get a sip of nice ice-cold tea while hands-free while I continue typing. I drink a lot of tea, these metal straws keep my teeth from being stained, they straws don’t stain either with regular cleaning. Best of all, the straws do not leave any after taste!
One of the greatest things about these stainless steel drinking straws by J.Carp are the food-grade silicone tips to keep your lips and teeth away from the metal itself, which I could imagine wouldn’t be too pleasant given the temperature of your drink. With these silicone tips, your teeth can stay away from the hard metal that may lead to chipping your teeth. I for sure enjoy that the mouthpieces are silicon, they are very durable and easy to wash, did I mention they come with assorted colors?! These would be perfect for older kids and teens.
I am never switching back, I will be gifting J.Carps Reusable Drinking Straw Kits to my family in the future. Everyone should have a healthy sustainable way to consume their drinks! My only regret is that after receiving these I found out that the seller has a Champagne straw kit, I would have gotten those instead, next time I will have to go for those.
Why I think everyone should make the switch
Safe to use
Plastic straws are icky, made with cancerous BPA chemicals that leech into your bloodstream… but these stainless steel reusable straws are safe to use, BPA-free, lead-free and come with a silicone tip so you don’t accidentally poke your eye when you’re going to take a drink without looking, just watch your nostrils.
These metal straws are extremely environmentally friendly, the manufacturing of plastic products, such as “disposable” single-use straws, release carcinogenic neurotoxic chemicals into our atmosphere. These single-use plastics including straws make their way into our delicate ecosystem. Using metal straws helps protect our environment, you can recycle these metal straws a lot more sustainably than you can plastic.
These stainless steel straws and silicone mouthpieces are reusable and can last for ages if they are taken care of, they could essentially last as long as you live. The stainless steel doesn’t leach chemicals like plastic straws do. Plastic straws leak BPA, gross! These metal straws are an overall healthier choice for you and your family.
Easy to clean
The stainless steel drinking straw kit by J.Carp comes with 4 cleaning brushes. If you’re like me and don’t have a dishwasher at home or you are the dishwasher, you’re able to easily clean each straw with the brush. I insert the brush from both ends and with warm soapy water. These straws are dishwasher safe if you do happen to have a dishwasher and don’t feel like cleaning the straws.
Durable and Portable
They are stainless steel, you could drive over them and not break these. They travel very well, take them to restaurants, fast food joints, use them at bars, or when you’re going to the movies(don’t forget your straw afterward).
They make an awesome gift
Why not share these sustainably of the great J.Carp Reusable Drinking straws with your family?!
